Our Commitment

ICAR – Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR) is committed to ensuring that its website is accessible to all users, including persons with disabilities. This website has been designed and developed in conformance with the Guidelines for Indian Government Websites (GIGW) Version 3.0 issued by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and the Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG), Government of India.

These guidelines incorporate the requirements of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).


Accessibility Features

The following accessibility features have been implemented on this website:

Navigation

  • Skip to Main Content — A "Skip to Main Content" link appears at the very top of each page and is visible when focused by keyboard, allowing keyboard users to bypass the navigation menu.
  • Breadcrumb trail — All inner pages display a breadcrumb trail to help users orient themselves within the site.
  • Sitemap — A HTML sitemap lists all major sections of the website.
  • Search — A search bar is available on all pages.
  • Consistent navigation — Navigation menus appear in the same location on every page.

Visual Adjustments

  • Text resize — Use the Accessibility panel (☰ Accessibility button in the top bar) to increase or decrease text size, or use your browser's built-in zoom (Ctrl +/−).
  • High contrast — A high-contrast black-and-white theme is available via the Accessibility panel.
  • Negative contrast — Inverted colour scheme available for users who prefer dark backgrounds.
  • Highlight links — All hyperlinks can be highlighted with a yellow background for easier identification.
  • Show/hide images — Images can be hidden to improve readability on low-bandwidth connections.

Keyboard Accessibility

  • All functionality is operable via keyboard alone.
  • Focus indicators are clearly visible on all interactive elements.
  • Drop-down menus are accessible via the Tab and arrow keys.
  • No keyboard traps are present.

Screen Reader Compatibility

  • All images carry descriptive alt text; decorative images have empty alt="" attributes.
  • ARIA landmark roles (banner, navigation, main, contentinfo) are used throughout.
  • Form fields are labelled with associated <label> elements.
  • Data tables include appropriate <th> headers with scope attributes.
  • A free screen reader (NVDA) link is provided in the top utility bar.

Language

  • The default language of all pages is declared as lang="en" in the HTML element.
  • A Google Translate widget is available in the footer for non-English speakers, including Hindi.

Standards Compliance

This website aims to conform to the following standards:

  • GIGW 3.0 — Guidelines for Indian Government Websites, National Informatics Centre, Government of India.
  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA — Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by W3C.
  • Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act (where applicable).

Pages on this website use valid HTML5 and CSS3. Where third-party content (e.g. embedded PDFs or videos) may not fully conform, we endeavour to provide accessible alternatives.


Known Limitations

  • Some older PDF documents may not be fully accessible. We are working to provide accessible versions or text alternatives.
  • Embedded third-party content (maps, videos) may not meet all WCAG 2.1 AA criteria.
