Basic Sciences Division

The Basic Sciences Division of the ICAR–Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR), Ludhiana focuses on advancing fundamental and applied research to support next-generation maize improvement. The division works on the development of advanced biotechnological platforms, including Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation and CRISPR-based genome editing systems in tropical maize, to enable precise trait modification.

Key research areas include the identification of kernel modifiers and genes associated with grain quality traits, facilitating their deployment in multi-trait stacking for improved nutritional and industrial value. The division also explores the potential of Vip3A-type vegetative insecticidal proteins for effective management of fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), contributing to insect resistance strategies.

In addition, systematic evaluation of maize germplasm for starch content and associated traits supports the development of maize varieties suited for food, feed, and industrial applications. Through integration of molecular biology, genomics, and biochemical approaches, the division provides a strong scientific foundation for sustainable maize research and development.
