Social Sciences Division
The Social Sciences Division of the ICAR–Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR), Ludhiana focuses on understanding the socio-economic dimensions of maize research and technology adoption to enhance impact at the farm level. The division undertakes studies on farmer-led innovations (FLIs) in maize and develops effective mechanisms for their validation, refinement, and scaling up.
A major area of work includes impact assessment of improved maize technologies across diverse agro-ecological regions to evaluate productivity gains, profitability, and livelihood outcomes. The division also critically examines farmer-participatory seed production models and supports their out-scaling through Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), particularly in eastern India, including Bihar and Odisha.
Through participatory approaches, policy-relevant analysis, and stakeholder engagement, the division contributes to inclusive, demand-driven maize development and strengthened seed and innovation delivery systems.
